All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. ![]() Expect daytime temperatures in the late 20s to early 30s (C) and but night-time temperatures in the desert can be a little fresh although nowhere near freezing, but there may be a dew. With its hot, dry winters, Oman makes for a perfect destination at this time of year. But for those with a sense of adventure who like to get off the beaten track to witness nature at its most serene and beautiful and are prepared to rough it a little, this is an experience that will stay with you forever. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. The camping, although comfortable with mattresses, tables and chairs, is reasonably rudimentary. This experience will not be for everyone. Here you will camp and explore, climb the dunes to watch the most stunning sunset, sit around a campfire and catch shooting stars, seemingly without another soul alive in the universe. The size of the dunes, the colour of the dunes and the scale on which this sand sea rides, stretching as it does over a quarter of a million square kilometres deep into Saudi Arabia and Yemen, is like nothing else. Your wild camp will be set up this evening in a remote area of the desert in a truly epic location. This fort is one of the best examples of defensive architecture in the country, and it’s worth climbing to the top of the tower to get a great view of the old town and modern city with it’s surrounding date plantations. This afternoon we visit the famous Nizwa fort, built in the 17th century to guard the Sumail Gap during the struggle between the Sultan and the Radical Imams. After lunch we drive down to the oasis city of Nizwa, once the capital of the powerful Omani Imamate. We then continue on to Al Hamra and its incredibly atmospheric old town, where there are mud houses dating back 400 years which are still occupied. ![]() This hike offers amazing views over the Grand Canyon of Oman, Wadi Nakhur. This follows a stony donkey track, and winds around the rim of the mountain to the abandoned village of As Sab, a total of around 6 km. This morning we will experience one of the most notable hikes in the country, the Balcony Walk. You tell us! And if you do get stuck while adventuring in the desert, first, don’t worry because it’s a right of passage, second, give us a call.DAY 3: Grand Canyon Walk - Drive to Nizwa ![]() We haven’t worked out a tour for it yet, so stay-tuned but we/it is available for charter for private groups or events, including booze cruises, weddings, trips to the Chenowth Legacy Lodge in Percebu, etc. NEW! We are now offering off-road recovery services thanks to our new tour vehicle, a 1964 Unimog. Truly an exhilarating way to experience desert life and see some of the best views in & around town. Not to worry, we will stop plenty of times along the way for photos/selfies and included refreshments. From there we will explore more of the desert via the race course “roads” and then return to San Felipe for some fun on the dunes and a cruise down the Malecon. This guided tour gets you into our 6-seater sandrail to experience the beauty of a living desert and have some definite off-roading fun! Traveling on mostly off-road trails, even part of the Score International Baja 1000 race course, you may see a herd or two of wild horses on our way to the Valley of the Giants, where you will take in some of the largest cactus in the world - the Cardon cactus, which are hundreds of years old. ![]()
